Autonomous UV-C Disinfection Robot
An autonomous UV-C disinfection robot featuring ROS2-based navigation, motion planning, and a camera-based human detection safety interlock. Finalist at the Biomedical Engineering Innovation Competition 2025.
This project was developed as part of the Biomedical Engineering Innovation Competition 2025 at International University, VNUHCM, where the team achieved a Finalist placing (Top 10 of 50 competing teams).
Project Overview
The system is a fully autonomous UV-C disinfection robot designed for deployment in healthcare environments. The robot is capable of navigating a target space independently while applying UV-C irradiation for surface disinfection, with built-in safety mechanisms to prevent exposure to human occupants.
Key Features
Autonomous Navigation and Motion Planning
- Implemented using ROS2, enabling real-time path planning and obstacle avoidance.
- The robot operates without manual control, following a pre-defined or dynamically computed disinfection path.
Human Detection Safety Interlock
- A camera-based module performs real-time human presence detection using computer vision techniques.
- Upon detection of a person within the disinfection zone, the UV-C emitters are automatically deactivated to prevent harm.
- Normal operation resumes once the area is confirmed clear.
Prototype and Demonstration
- A fully functional hardware prototype was constructed and demonstrated live at the competition.
